517 Pounds of Marijuana Seized at Ports

DOUGLAS — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a drug smuggling attempt when they seized nearly 340 pounds of marijuana hidden in a double floor of a vehicle.

The incident began about 7 p.m. Sunday as officers were screening traffic coming from Mexico. The officers selected a Mexican-made 2000 Chevrolet Sonora for inspection. It was being driven by a 41-year-old man from Agua Prieta, Sonora, officers said.

With the assistance of a specially trained dog and high-tech tools, the officers discovered the floor of the Chevy Sonora had been built up. The double floor concealed packages of marijuana, officers said. The total weight of marijuana was nearly 340 pounds, with an estimated street value of $3 million.

Officers seized the vehicle and the marijuana. The man was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for questioning.

Meanwhile, at the San Luis port of entry in western Arizona, Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $1.6 million worth of marijuana in three separate cases.
